Unexpectedly, Forever
A poem about unexpected love, unspoken feelings and all
the moments that could have been. An original Lyrmotion poem
inspired by the emotional world of Maxton Hall
I know.
I know everything
about you.
At least
that's what
I thought.
What I didn't know
was how easily
I would lose myself
in your eyes.
Do we have
a chance?
Or did we never
stand a chance?
Will we surrender
to everything
we never say,
or let ourselves
be carried away
into this strange
game of love?
Are we holding
the right cards
even when everyone around us
expects us to lose?
Is there still an ace
hidden somewhere
between us?
Or did we gamble
too much, risk too much
in a game
where our hearts
were always the stakes?
Tell me
you love me.
Even when
our worlds collide.
Even when
we lose ourselves
inside a labyrinth
of secrets,
circumstances,
expectations,
and lives
that were never
supposed to meet.
We dance the steps
society expects of us.
The right people.
The right choices.
The right worlds.
Perhaps you and I
were never supposed
to dance together.
And yet —
there is no one
with whom I can be
as completely myself
as I am
with you.
With you,
there is only now.
And even
when you hurt me,
even when
my heart breaks,
every tear
somehow still carries
the same longing:
you.
I tell myself
I shouldn't
want you like this.
That reason
should be stronger.
That I should
be able to think
of something —
anything —
other than you.
But perhaps
this is what happens
when feelings
lead us somewhere
the mind
would never
have allowed us
to go.
We give away
our hearts
because sometimes
loving someone
is not a decision
we remember making.
It simply
happens.
And with you,
for once,
I didn't have
to become
someone else
to be loved.
You listened.
You seemed
to understand me.
And yet —
you were silent.
I never knew
how much silence
could hurt
until it came
from you.
But my tears
were never
only about sadness.
I was grieving something
that never happened:
every moment with you
that could have been.
Every morning.
Every touch.
Every laugh.
Every ordinary day
we might
have lived
if life had let us.
I wanted every moment
that could have been
with you.
Because with you,
life felt different.
Freer.
As though
being myself
had suddenly become
the easiest thing
in the world.
As though
there had always been an us
somewhere before we knew
how to name it.
And perhaps
that is why
you surprised me.
Before anyone said your name,
there was that look.
That pull.
That inexplicable feeling
of being drawn to someone
who was nothing like I expected.
You were
unexpectedly kind.
Unexpectedly close.
Unexpectedly real.
Unexpectedly, love.
And perhaps
that is what
you will always be:
the love I never expected
and somehow recognized.
You wrote yourself
into my heart
before I understood
that I had let you in.
I only wish
you had stayed.
Unexpectedly.
Forever.
