Sophie to Benedict

Inspired by Bridgerton Season 4 — a letter poem

about hidden identity, devotion and the ache of leaving out of love.

I lost my heart

to you

from the very first moment.

In your eyes,

I saw my world.

And yet

it is that very world

that keeps me

from unmasking myself.

I could hardly believe it.

I tried to deny it.

And yet

I saw love

in your eyes —

love from the very first moment

we met.

But I do not belong

to your world.

And how could I ever ask

that you leave it behind?

I could never bear

to see you unhappy.

So I must run.

I must leave.

Our love is forbidden,

and it knows no mercy.

And yet

I lose myself completely

whenever someone

speaks your name.

You see me.

You see who I truly am

behind the façade.

Every word,

every conversation,

every glance

with you

fills my heart.

My heart is yours.

And yet

I must break it

so yours does not shatter.

I cannot accept

your promises.

You may not understand,

but all I want

is for you

to be happy.

I cannot ask you

to leave everything behind —

even for love.

And wherever I turn,

I see only you.

Only you.

When we are alone,

we create a world

that belongs only to us —

a world no one knows,

no one can destroy.

But only

for a fleeting moment

of our lives.

I found love.

True love.

And yet

it seems hopeless.

We are mirrors

of one another —

alike,

opposites,

inseparable —

and yet divided

by the tides of society

that pull us apart.

In a world

of masks,

superficiality,

and performance,

I found something

real,

honest,

true:

your love.

I wish we could speak it aloud

and change the world,

because it is love.
