Would You Let Me
A poem about the kind of love that simply stays.
Some people ask
if they're allowed to love you.
Not out of doubt —
but because they've learnt
that closeness
is something you have to be given
permission for.
This is a poem
made entirely of that question.
The Poem
Would you let me be the light
in your heart's darkest night?
Would you let me kiss your doubts away,
and let my laughter guard your tears
before they reach your cheeks?
Would you let my fingers
move through your hair
whenever you're nervous?
Would you let me sit beside you
in silence,
when the world is too loud
to say anything at all?
Would you let me stand
between you and the fear,
every time
a difficult moment comes?
Would you let me be the one
who tends your scars —
and keeps the new ones
from finding you?
Would you let me be there,
in the darkness of the night,
in the first hour of a new day,
when the sun finds your skin?
Would you be my temptation,
my soul's most beautiful sin?
Would you let me?
Closing Note
We talk about love
as something you fall into.
But most of the time
it's a question —
asked quietly,
again and again,
by someone waiting
to be told
they're allowed.
